Shaping tomorrow's parks

Project update - January 2026

  • Design considerations and finalizations through March/April 2026
  • Old park equipment will be removed in August 2026
  • The new equipment will be installed in August/September 2026
  • Watch for a grand opening event Fall 2026

Purpose

Parks and playgrounds are important to Cochrane residents of all ages. That’s why we’re updating aging and under-used spaces to better reflect how the community wants to use them. Over the next few years we will be supporting specific playground and park areas that have been identified as higher need for support.

When a playground is due for replacement, we look at whether it should be refreshed with new equipment or redesigned with other features like picnic areas, benches, or open green space. The playground replacement at Samuel Spicer Park will create an accessible, inclusive, welcoming and fun play area designed to accommodate children and families of all abilities.

Cochrane’s playground lifecycle program

Cochrane is home to 46 playgrounds, many of which are reaching the end of their usable life. To plan ahead and support active play in every neighbourhood, the Town launched the Playground Lifecycle Program in 2022. This long-term program replaces or updates at least one playground each year so families can continue to have access to safe, inclusive places to play.

Centennial Park was the first playground to be renewed through the program. Samuel Spicer Park has been selected as the sixth replacement project. Other completed projects include West Valley tot lot, Matt Krol, Bow Meadows and Wearmouth playground.
